The first cold front this Fall came thru last night.
We’re in the 50’s as we head out from lake Winder
to Penny Wah Swamp a good 8 miles South.
Hurricane Ian has left the St Johns in flood stage.
There is literally nowhere to stop and get out.
No inside sandbars and the nearest Indian Midden
is back on the South West side of Winder.
With high water Penny Wah is as spiritual
as it is peaceful. In this quiet, which it always is
you can imagine the Seminoles dipping their paddles
from their canoes and before them the Ais
and the Timucua and now us.
Last year when I was here, I hiked thru
where we paddled today. True the bigger
Cypress are gone but still if there’s a greater presence
than us, her spirit surely lives here.
With my nephew Troy.
“I strive to be one
With all living things
Great and small
That we come together
And share this same world
If only for a moment”
